How are they detected?

A doctor can usually recognize genital warts just by seeing them. If you do have genital warts, your doctor may also examine you for abnormal cervical cells —because you may be infected with more than one type of HPV. So, if you think you might have genital warts, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
